How We Do Born-Digital (Love Me, I’m a Liberal)

June 17, 2015

How We Do Born-Digital (music from Love Me, I’m a Liberal [lyrics, video])

I’ve seen the OAIS model
I read OCLC reports
White papers from Digital POWRR
And the Blue Ribbon Task Force
To make sure I don’t ever lose them
They’re printed and filed in drawers
That’s how we, how we, how we, do born-digital

I Jumped In with the Manuscripts Section
I counted those disks and CDs
I reminisced about my old Zip drive
I marveled at 5 inch floppies
For now they’ll just stay in their boxes
A time capsule of the nineties
That’s how we, how we, how we, do born-digital

I spent my lunch watching a webinar
On digital preservation
I once calculated a checksum
And someday I’ll do it again
But I can’t even think about starting
Without a forensics workstation
That’s how we, how we, how we, do born-digital

Once our archives were just paper
After you process, you’re through
No worries about obsolescence
Migration? That’s something birds do!
This digital stuff’s for young people
We’ll bring in an intern or two
That’s how we, how we, how we, do born-digital

The OAIS song

September 9, 2013

Am I being presumptuous, thinking there isn’t already a song about OAIS?

Music is from Oh Shenandoah, public domain. Lyrics are CC-licensed. If you want to record or improve this song, yes, please do!

OAIS
for long-term storage
Gaze upon its reference model
OAIS
for long-term storage
Files sa…fely tucked away
Within a digital repository.

The archive has
Three key stakeholders
Described in this reference model
Producer, consumer, and management
(All want) files sa…fely tucked away
Within a digital repository

OAIS
Has mechanisms
Making a functional model
From ingest on to storage on to access
Files sa…fely tucked away
Within a digital repository

The archive has
Information objects
In an information model
Where SIPs turn into AIPs turn into DIPs
Files sa…fely tucked away
Within a digital repository

OAIS
Is not so scary
Once you understand the model
Now you can build a preservation system
Files sa…fely tucked away
Within a digital repository
